Digital diva Hatsune Miku has sold out her four shows in Tokyo, totalling more than 10,000 eager ticket buyers. She’s a program developed by Crypton Future Media, but is received by fans as enthusiastically as human musicians. Fans that were not at the actual event packed some 24 cinemas to watch a live feed of the concert.
The computer generated, voice-synthesized, virtual singer merges the performances of over 20 people into one soundtrack. As we reported last year, Crypton records voice actors, then runs the vocal tracks through Yamaha’s Vocaloid software to create Hatsune Miku’s voice.
It should be noted that Crypton’s program can be purchased and programmed by users to have her perform any song on their computer. So while Crypton creates the motion graphics and does the development work, fans are the ones co-creating the music Hatsune Miku performs. With this tight community around the virtual superstar, we can expect more music apps and cutting edge opportunities for partners.
